LSVI hosts Food Drive

The Louisiana School for the Visually Impraired recently hosted a canned goods drive to benefit the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank. The drive was led by Kindergarten through third grades and more than 750 cans of food were delivered.

"The Baton Rouge community has been so good in giving to our students that we felt it was important to give something back to the community and teach our students the importance of giving," said Megan Terrell, a second  grade teacher.

Mobile Farmers Market open in North Baton Rouge

Mobile Farmers Market open in North Baton Rouge

The new Red Stick Mobile Farmers Market  is bringing more fresh fruits and vegetables to the inner city.

It is open every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Scotlandville Branch Library, 7373 Scenic Highway, and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Star Hill Baptist Church, 1400 North Foster Drive.

The new Red Stick Mobile Farmers Market will provide a consistent retail source of locally grown, farm fresh produce in the areas of North Baton Rouge currently designated as food deserts because they lack ready access to grocery stores and other outlets that offer healthy foods.

The Mobile Market will travel into the city’s food deserts on a weekly basis, offering a variety of seasonal produce.

Plans call for the new mobile market to expand to six to eight locations later this year.
