BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB)- The Louisiana House of Representatives has failed to pass a plan allowing for a statewide vote on a new school district in East Baton Rouge parish.
The vote was 66 to 34. However, the measure needed at least 70 votes to pass since it would require a constitutional amendment.
While the measure failed today, it is not over. Because the bill required a majority vote to pass, the sponsor of the bill will be given one more opportunity for a vote this session. That second vote could come as early as this Saturday.
Members of the House of Representatives passed the bill last week (SB 563) that created the breakaway school district in East Baton Rouge Parish, however, the constitutional amendment (SB 299) still needed a vote allowing the breakaway to happen.
