Woman injured getting her child out of burning home | News

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB)- A woman who awoke to heavy smoke in her home cut herself while saving her small child from the house fire. The injury required a trip to the hospital.
The fire sparked in the 1000 block of Monterrey Boulevard around 7 a.m.
The Baton Rouge Fire Department reported a woman living there said her alarm woke her up and she walked out of the bedroom to find the hallway filled with thick smoke.
Firefighters said the woman grabbed her small child and ran out of a glass door to the back of the home.
They said she cut herself on that door and was taken to the hospital by EMS. The extent of her injuries was not released. Her condition is unknown.
Authorities said the living room and hallway were destroyed by flames.
They added the rest of the home had smoke and water damage.
The total damage was estimated at about $130,000.
The Red Cross was called to help the family.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
