DOTD celebrates start of $78.4 million U.S. 190 bridge repair

DOTD celebrates start of $78.4 million U.S. 190 bridge repair

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) Secretary Sherri H. LeBas led a ceremony to mark the beginning of a $74.8 million project to paint and perform structural steel repairs to the U.S. 190 Old Mississippi River Bridge between Baton Rouge and Port Allen. The ceremony was held at Cemus where LeBas was joined by state and local officials to celebrate the project’s kickoff.

The bridge, which carries an average of 28,600 commuters daily, links East Baton Rouge and West Baton Rouge parishes, is part of a major freight corridor that is critical to the region and serves the entire state, connecting to I-10 and I-110 in Baton Rouge, to I-49 in Opelousas and to I-55 in Hammond, and serves as an alternate route to I-10 for east-west traffic. Painting and performing structural steel repairs to this vital bridge will extend the life of the bridge, a vital link between East Baton Rouge and West Baton Rouge parishes, while improving the overall appearance of the structure and revitalizing the surrounding area for residents and businesses.

Lanes re-open at I-10 Essen

All lanes are now open on Interstate 10 East  at Essen, but traffic is still very congested at Interstate 10 to LA-1 and I-110 South at Capitol Access Road.

The problem was caused by a pickup truck that hit a Budweiser truck at 4:15 p.m. The truck has been towed, but traffic is still backed up so practice some patience.

White Castle ferry service delayed until mid-September

White Castle ferry service delayed until mid-September

The Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) recently announced a revised estimate for when the White Castle ferry is expected to return to service.

The ferry was scheduled to return to service the last week of August after crews complete repairs to the ferry’s propeller shaft; however, delays in acquiring a dry-dock at the ship yard has moved the estimated return to service date to mid-September.

Service initially ceased after an inspection by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) discovered problems with the ferry’s propeller shaft. After further inspection, it was determined that the ferry would need to be dry-docked to make the necessary repairs due to damage being more extensive than expected. The repairs must be made before the USCG gives DOTD clearance to resume service.

Before traveling, drivers can call the Toll-Free Ferry Information line at 1-888-613-3779 for the status of the ferry, or visit the "Ferry Status" page on the right-hand side of the DOTD Web site.
